What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
I use an attachment based approach in my work with relationships - this is called Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT.
It is a proven effective treatment for healing relationship distress and strengthening attachment bonds.
EFT is a well-researched, structured approach to relationship therapy founded in the early 1980's by Dr. Susan Johnson.
Using EFT, 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements.
Emotionally Focused Therapy is being used with many different kinds of relationships in private practice, university training centers and hospital clinics and with many different cultural groups throughout the world.
These distressed relationships include partners suffering from disorders such as depression, post traumatic stress disorders and chronic illness.
There is a brief description of the work and the research which has been developed about its effectiveness. You can also read about EFT in this article by Sue Johnson, it's main developer: http://www.psychotherapy.net/article/couples-therapy-attachment
I am a Certified EFT Therapist, Supervisor and Trainer with ICEEFT Ottawa.

When Can Intensive Relationship Therapy Help?
We all get disconnected and across time, we know that doing life together can get tough.
You could be ready for a Relationship Intensive when:
You could be ready for a Relationship Intensive when:
- You have identified your negative pattern in your individual or relationship therapy & need a boost to go deeper
- There has been a crisis & you are in distress
- You are getting along o.k. but you want to deepen your understanding & closeness
- Your work schedule prevents you from attending weekly therapy sessions
- You are a therapist or public person yourself & you want care in your own relationship, along with privacy while you work on it
- You both have the same goal for therapy – you both want to work on the relationship
- You are not sure if you have the same goal for the relationship - and you want to clarify and connect re where and how you are stuck
When is Intensive Relationship Therapy Not Suitable?
An Intensive may not be appropriate if:
- There is an on-going emotional or sexual affair
- Your alcohol/other drug, sexual, or other addiction is active and untreated
- There is coercive control or active interpersonal partner violence in the relationship which has not been addressed
- Being in the same room together is too triggering due to trauma; or you have not been able to be civilly in the same space for some time, this format is not suitable. (Shorter, weekly sessions to titrate this contact will be more helpful).

Planning for Intensives
Intensives are scheduled for either the beginning or end of the week. We meet for a total of 8 - 12 hours over two, three, or four days. The first day, I will meet with you together and then individually and then together again. The rest of the time will be spent together.
Most couples prefer to arrive in the early afternoon the day before and settle in before we meet the following day. This allows some time to relax, recover from your travels, and prepare for our time together.
Even if you are local, please use this time as a retreat, so you can focus on your relationship without outside distractions.
You can take time between sessions to review the material, walk on the beach, have a massage or hotpool, walk up the Mount, and snooze or relax. Working at depth in emotionally focused therapy is tiring and also rewarding.

Testimonials from Couples who have worked with Yve
Couple 1 - Online
What was the most difficult thing about the Couples Intensive format?
We found nothing at all difficult with the format of CI. In fact, we had planned the time well in advance so was really looking forward to it.
Describe what was most beneficial about the Intensive/s:
We quickly saw how our individual actions had affected the relationship and were then able to express our feelings of hurt in a safe and comfortable environment.
Describe what impact the Couples Intensive had on the health and well-being of your relationship:
The CI opened up communications again and we saw the possibilities of a much more productive and satisfying relationship.
Describe what you liked about working with Yve as a couple in this Intensive format:
Yve presented as a strong warm relationship guide taking us quickly to a level we could never have achieved on our own, no matter how committed we were.
Any comments you would like to share with other potential Couples Intensive couples:
Yve has the ability to allow you to find a deeper understanding easily, if you come with an open heart and a willingness to put the work in.
Couple 2 - In-person & online
What was the most difficult thing about the Couples Intensive format?
It’s exhausting as it is deeply emotional but very worth it.
Describe what was most beneficial about the Intensive/s:
Mat time! The process that supported us to move deeper to explore and understand our own fears and feelings and hear what the other person was experiencing and feeling in a structured and safe way (applies to in-person)
Describe what impact the Couples Intensive had on the health and well-being of your relationship:
Honestly, it saved our marriage. For a variety of reasons, we were in a very difficult place and we both truly feel that both EFT as an approach and Yve’s skills as a therapist is the reason we are still together and stronger in our marriage and connection than ever before. A different approach or a different counsellor and there would have been a very different result.
Describe what you liked about working with Yve as a couple in this Intensive format:
Yve is amazing, she has a warmth and openness which makes you feel very comfortable but also keeps the process moving forward and focused on the deeper/underlying issues rather than surface issues. She makes you feel safe and respected as you explore these for yourself and your partner.
Any comments you would like to share with other potential Couples Intensive couples:
It was nice to do follow-up with Yve after we made it through being in crisis and continue to work on our relationship when things were in a more positive place. This supported us to continue to deepen our understandings of self and each other and our connection.
